The Legacy of Willie Stargell
Willie Stargell, a left-handed slugger, played major league baseball for 21 years with the Pittsburgh Pirates. His exceptional talent and contributions to the sport were recognized when he was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. Tragically, Stargell passed away in 2001 due to kidney disease, a loss that deeply impacted the baseball community and beyond.
The Willie Stargell Foundation's Commitment
In the year following Stargell's passing, his widow, Margaret Weller-Stargell, established the Willie Stargell Foundation. This organization has been providing financial assistance to local patients living with kidney disease for over two decades, thanks to the generous support of its sponsors. Additionally, the foundation has funded healthcare facilities and universities, including the Willie Stargell Dialysis Unit at Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center, as well as contributing to the kidney transplant programs at Duke Health and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The foundation has also awarded grants to the nursing schools at the University of North Carolina Wilmington and Cape Fear Community College.
