NFL Week 3 Recap: Immediate fantasy football takeaways from Monday’s games

Shaking Up the Bills' Receiving Corps: Keon Coleman's Benching and the Emergence of Khalil Shakir

The Buffalo Bills' wide receiver depth chart has undergone a significant shakeup, with rookie Keon Coleman being benched and Khalil Shakir emerging as a potential playmaker. Meanwhile, the Jaguars' tight end situation has become more complicated with Brenton Strange's increased role, and the Commanders have found a more consistent wide receiver rotation. In the Bengals' matchup, the focus is on Austin Ekeler's health and Tee Higgins' return to the lineup.

The Bills Bench Keon Coleman: A Surprising Shift in the Depth Chart

The Buffalo Bills have made a surprising move, benching rookie wide receiver Keon Coleman. After playing a significant role in the first two weeks, Coleman found himself relegated to the fourth spot on the depth chart, with no clear explanation. However, the silver lining is that Coleman was able to score his first NFL touchdown once he finally saw the field. This decision by the Bills' coaching staff has raised eyebrows, as Coleman had been a consistent contributor in the first two games, playing more than 90% of the offensive snaps. The shift in playing time saw Khalil Shakir and Marquez Valdes-Scantling take on larger roles, with Shakir seeing increased playing time in two-wide receiver sets and Valdes-Scantling replacing Coleman as the outside receiver in three-receiver formations. While this development is not ideal for Coleman, it does present an opportunity for Shakir. The increased playing time and solid statistical performance in this game could be a sign of things to come for the second-year wide receiver. However, it's worth noting that Coleman's benching also had a negative impact on Curtis Samuel, who saw limited playing time on the first two drives.Head coach Sean McDermott cited an "issue with being on time" as the reason for Coleman's initial benching, but the fact that he continued to be a part-time player rather than immediately returning to his usual role is slightly concerning. Nevertheless, it's still early in the season, and it would be premature to give up on the highly drafted rookie. Monitoring Coleman's playing time and usage in the coming weeks will be crucial in determining his fantasy value.

Tee Higgins Returns to the Bengals' Offense

The Cincinnati Bengals welcomed back star wide receiver Tee Higgins, who missed the first two weeks of the season due to a hamstring injury. Unlike some previous instances when Higgins has returned from injury, he was not placed on a snap count and was able to resume his normal role in the offense. While Higgins' target share was not as high as usual, his presence on the field had a positive impact on the Bengals' passing attack. With Higgins back, Andrei Iosivas moved to the slot receiver position, and Trenton Irwin was a healthy inactive, allowing younger receivers Jermaine Burton and Charlie Jones to maintain their backup roles. The return of Higgins also benefited Ja'Marr Chase, as defenses were less able to double-team him as they had in the past. This development should allow Chase to continue his dominance and finish the season as a top-10 fantasy wide receiver, while Higgins may need some time to fully regain his target share and become a consistent fantasy starter.

Brenton Strange Continues to Impress in Evan Engram's Absence

The Jacksonville Jaguars have continued to rely on Brenton Strange in the absence of Evan Engram, who has missed the last two games due to a hamstring injury. Strange has stepped up, essentially taking on Engram's role and seeing increased playing time.In this latest game, the Jaguars added Josiah Deguara to the roster, allowing them to have their typical three-tight end rotation. However, Strange still managed to see more offensive snaps than Engram would have, showcasing his growing importance in the Jaguars' offense.Strange's performance has been impressive, as he caught two passes for 12 yards and a touchdown in Engram's absence. If Engram continues to miss time, Strange should be considered one of the top waiver wire options at the tight end position, given his combination of playing time and target share. This situation also raises questions about Engram's future role when he returns. With the Jaguars currently 0-3, there may come a point where the team starts to look towards the future, potentially leading to more snaps for the younger Strange and fewer for the veteran Engram. This could complicate Engram's fantasy value, as he may no longer be a reliable every-week starter.

The Jaguars' Wide Receiver Rotation Continues to Evolve

The Jacksonville Jaguars have made some subtle changes to their wide receiver rotation, with Parker Washington and Devin Duvernay seeing more playing time in 11 personnel packages. This resulted in Gabe Davis and Brian Thomas Jr. seeing slightly less time on the field, while Christian Kirk's snaps decreased as the Jaguars spent more time in 11 personnel. These changes, while not drastic, did lead to Washington recording as many receiving yards as Davis. It's a situation worth monitoring going forward, but the Jaguars' overall offensive struggles are a more significant concern than the slight changes in playing time.

The Commanders Solidify Their Wide Receiver Rotation

The Washington Commanders have found a more consistent wide receiver rotation, with Noah Brown emerging as the clear starter opposite Terry McLaurin. Brown saw fewer snaps than only McLaurin, as he was not included in the three-tight end sets that the Commanders utilized.Meanwhile, Dyami Brown and Olamide Zaccheaus, who had been battling for the outside receiver spot, have settled into more defined roles. Zaccheaus has taken on some slot work, while Luke McCaffrey has remained the primary slot receiver in 11 personnel. This more stable wide receiver rotation could make Noah Brown a waiver wire target in deeper leagues, as he has solidified his role as the Commanders' second-best receiving option behind McLaurin.

Austin Ekeler's Health Becomes a Concern

The Washington Commanders' matchup with the Cincinnati Bengals was marred by a concerning injury to Los Angeles Chargers running back Austin Ekeler. Ekeler suffered a concussion in the third quarter and was unable to return to the game.Prior to the injury, the Commanders had utilized both Ekeler and Brian Robinson on the field, allowing both players to see more playing time than usual. However, once Ekeler left the game, Robinson became the every-down back for Washington. If Ekeler is forced to miss any time due to the concussion, Robinson would immediately become a must-start fantasy option, as he would likely take on a larger workload in the Commanders' offense. Fantasy managers will need to closely monitor Ekeler's progress through the concussion protocol in the coming days.

The Bengals' Running Back Rotation Sees Increased Efficiency

The Cincinnati Bengals' running back rotation remained consistent, with Zack Moss continuing to serve as the primary ball carrier. However, this week saw an increased level of efficiency from both Moss and Chase Brown, as they each averaged more than five yards per carry and had runs of 15 yards or more. While Brown led the team in rushing yards, it was Moss who continued to see the majority of the playing time. The Bengals' blowout victory allowed them to utilize both running backs more, but it remains to be seen if Brown's strong performance will earn him a larger role in the offense going forward.Nonetheless, the improved running game is a positive sign for the Bengals' offense, and it will be worth monitoring how the backfield touches are distributed in future games, especially if the team is able to maintain a lead.
