Top 100 Games in 100 Years of BYU Football: 70-61

Celebrating a Century of Cougar Gridiron Glory: BYU's Top 100 Football Moments

As the Brigham Young University Cougars prepare to embark on their 100th season of football in 2024, it's the perfect time to reflect on the program's rich history and the most iconic moments that have defined its legacy. From championship triumphs to record-breaking performances, the Cougars have etched their name in the annals of college football lore. Join us as we delve into the top 100 games that have shaped the BYU football experience, showcasing the passion, determination, and sheer brilliance that have made this program a true powerhouse in the western United States.

A Century of Cougar Gridiron Greatness

Toppling the Titans: BYU's Biggest Upsets

The Cougars have long been known for their ability to punch above their weight, taking down powerhouse programs that boast far greater resources and pedigree. One such triumph came in 2004, when BYU traveled to South Bend and emerged victorious over the mighty Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Quarterback Matt Berry and the Cougars outdueled a young Brady Quinn, with wide receiver Todd Watkins racking up 115 yards to lead the charge. Fast forward to 2021, and the Cougars once again proved their mettle against a storied opponent, this time the USC Trojans. Trailing late, BYU quarterback Jaren Hall orchestrated a clutch game-winning drive, capped off by a touchdown pass to Puka Nacua that will live long in the memory of Cougar faithful.

Nail-Biting Finishes: BYU's Thrilling Comebacks

When the game is on the line, the Cougars have a knack for delivering heart-stopping, edge-of-your-seat finishes. In 2022, BYU traveled to Boise State, facing a Broncos squad that was riding high. With the game hanging in the balance, Jaren Hall lofted a pass into the end zone, where Puka Nacua made a spectacular, toe-tapping catch to give the Cougars a late lead. The defense held firm, and BYU emerged victorious in a classic. The Cougars' 2023 triumph over Arkansas in Fayetteville was another nail-biter, with Chase Roberts making a clutch touchdown catch to seal the deal.

Defensive Dominance: BYU's Shutdown Performances

While the Cougars' offense has often been the focal point, the program has also boasted some formidable defensive units over the years. In 1998, BYU and San Diego State squared off in a crucial WAC showdown, with the Cougars' defense taking center stage. Brian Gray's 39-yard interception return for a touchdown proved to be the difference, as the Cougars' stifling defense held the Aztecs scoreless in a 13-0 victory. Fast forward to 2016, and Kalani Sitake's debut as head coach was marked by a gritty 18-16 win over Arizona, with kicker Jake Oldroyd's game-winning field goal sealing the deal.

Bowl Game Brilliance: BYU's Postseason Triumphs

The Cougars have long been a fixture in the postseason, and their bowl game performances have often been the stuff of legend. In 2020, BYU faced off against UCF in the Boca Raton Bowl, determined to prove that they deserved a spot in a New Year's Six bowl. Quarterback Zach Wilson and the Cougars' offense put on a masterclass, racking up 655 total yards and 49 points in a dominant victory. Two years later, BYU found itself in another thrilling bowl game, this time against SMU. With the Cougars' quarterback depth chart depleted, Sol-Jay Maiava-Peters stepped up, leading the team to a 24-23 win that was sealed by a heroic goal-line stand.

Landmark Victories: BYU's Conference Triumphs

The Cougars' football program has long been synonymous with success in conference play, and their victories over rival programs have often been the catalyst for championship runs. In 1974, BYU traveled to Tucson and defeated a top-20 ranked Arizona squad, a crucial step towards the Cougars' first-ever WAC championship. That same year, BYU also took down Arizona State, another ranked opponent, in a thrilling 21-18 victory that propelled the team to a Fiesta Bowl appearance. As the Cougars prepare to embark on their 100th season of football, the memories of these iconic moments will undoubtedly serve as inspiration for the next generation of Cougar greats. From heart-stopping comebacks to dominant defensive performances, the BYU football program has etched its name in the annals of college football history, and the best is yet to come.
