‘The United States of América’: how Willy Chavarria is rewriting American fashion

‘The United States of América’: how Willy Chavarria is rewriting American fashion

Fashion Designer Willy Chavarria Celebrates the American Spirit and Immigrant Contributions

Willy Chavarria, a fashion designer with deep roots in the immigrant experience, is using his platform to shine a light on the often-overlooked contributions of immigrants to the fabric of American society. Through his S/S 2025 runway show, titled "América," Chavarria pays homage to the hardworking individuals who have built this nation, from farmworkers to retail employees, and in the process, reclaims the American dream for those who have long been denied its full realization.

Reclaiming the American Dream, One Fashion Show at a Time

Cultivating a Deeply Personal Perspective

As the child of an Irish-American mother and Mexican-American father, Chavarria grew up in a working-class migrant family in rural Fresno, California. This experience has profoundly shaped his worldview and artistic sensibilities. "The community that I grew up in as a kid had a tremendous influence on not only my aesthetic and my work ethic, but also my view of what the country is that we live in, what it means to be American," he reflects. Chavarria's upbringing instilled in him a deep sense of pride in his heritage and a unwavering belief in the American dream, despite the challenges his family faced.

A Timely Tribute to Immigrant Contributions

Chavarria's "América" collection was conceived against the backdrop of a pivotal moment in American politics, with a major election looming. "Given the time that we're in – around the corner from a major election – I wanted to shine light on the people who make this country work, and also celebrate immigration and those people who have built the country and are still the backbone of the country," he explains. By showcasing the lives and experiences of specific characters he grew up with – from farmworkers to retail employees – Chavarria aims to give voice and dignity to the unsung heroes who have long been the driving force behind America's success.

Redefining Luxury and Accessibility

Chavarria's vision for his brand goes beyond the runway, as he aspires to make his designs more accessible to the very communities that have inspired him. "I definitely have this belief that we can do luxury and we can do tank tops," he says. "It's a different way of working and a different way of selling clothes that no one has ever really done under one label. But I absolutely believe that this is the time for it." By blending high-end and affordable elements, Chavarria seeks to bridge the gap between luxury fashion and the everyday lives of the working class, further cementing his status as a champion of the American dream.

Celebrating the American Spirit Through Collaboration

Chavarria's "América" collection was more than just a runway show; it was a multifaceted celebration of the American spirit. The event featured a performance by the urban sierreño trio Yahritza y Su Esencia, bringing the sounds of the Yakima Valley to the heart of New York City. Additionally, the invitation image, captured by photographer Carlos Jaramillo, depicted a tattooed Chicano man holding a baby, representing the hope for a brighter future. Furthermore, attendees were given copies of the American Constitution by the ACLU and stickers urging them to vote, underscoring Chavarria's belief in the power of civic engagement to drive meaningful change.

Cementing His Status as a Distinct American Voice

Chavarria's journey to becoming one of the country's most celebrated menswear designers is a testament to the enduring power of the American dream. From his humble beginnings in Fresno to his acclaimed tenure at iconic American brands like Calvin Klein, Chavarria's success story exemplifies the transformative potential of hard work, resilience, and a deep connection to one's cultural heritage. His recognition as the 2023 American Menswear Designer of the Year at the CFDA Awards further solidifies his position as a leading voice in the fashion industry, one that amplifies the stories and experiences of the diverse communities that have shaped the American landscape.
