Comeback Kids: Midway 10-year-old All-Atars clinch little league state title

Midway Little League's Triumphant Return to the Top

In a remarkable display of resilience and determination, a Central Texas Little League team has etched its name in the annals of baseball history. The Midway Little League's 10-year-old All-Stars baseball team has become the first team in the league's storied legacy to clinch a state title since 2019, overcoming adversity and showcasing the true spirit of the game.

Comeback Kids Conquer the Competition

Overcoming Adversity, Claiming the Crown

The Midway Little League's 10-year-old All-Stars baseball team has been on a remarkable journey this season, earning the moniker "comeback kids" for their unwavering determination. After losing a game in the sectional tournament, the team rallied and fought their way back through the loser's bracket, ultimately emerging victorious. This resilience was on full display at the Little League 8–10-year-old baseball Texas West State Championship in Abilene, where the team once again found themselves in the loser's bracket after an early loss.Undeterred, the Midway Little League squad fought their way back, securing two decisive victories over Laredo to clinch the state title. "I'm so proud of these boys," said manager Josh Jurgenson. "It's been a long, rough summer. They've played so hard, had to come back multiple times. We lost a game in the sectional tournament, came back out of the loser's bracket and won. Did the same thing at state. Lost our first game, came back through the loser's bracket and beat Laredo twice at the end. So they are truly the comeback kids and we're so proud of them."

A Family Affair: Carrying on the Legacy

The triumph held special significance for the Jurgenson family, as manager Josh Jurgenson's son, Brown, was one of the players on the championship team. Brown expressed the profound joy of winning the state title, especially since his older brother, Brooks, had been part of the last Midway Little League team to claim the state crown five years ago."It was really special for me to win state because my dad is the head coach and I got to play with all my friends on the team, and it was really cool because five years ago my brother won state on the same field, and I'll have these memories forever," Brown said, reflecting on the family's deep-rooted connection to the sport and the league.

Teamwork and Camaraderie: The Driving Force

The Midway Little League's triumph was not just a testament to individual talent, but also to the power of teamwork and camaraderie. Player Harrison Polnick, whose father Benjie served as an assistant coach, highlighted the team's remarkable performance in the tournament, particularly their dominant second-inning display against Laredo."My favorite part about the two-game series against Laredo was when we scored 11 runs in the second inning," Harrison said, underscoring the team's ability to come together and deliver when it mattered most.Teammate Andrew Welstead echoed the sentiment, expressing the joy of the journey and the ultimate reward of becoming state champions. "It feels great to be a state champion," Welstead said. "After we've worked really hard after two months and our hard work and dedication has paid off."

A Legacy of Excellence: Midway Little League Shines

The Midway Little League's success at the state tournament extended beyond the 10-year-old All-Stars team. The league's 12-year-old softball team claimed the state runner-up title, while the 11-year-old baseball team also reached the same milestone. The 10-year-old girls' team, not to be outdone, secured a third-place finish, showcasing the depth and breadth of talent within the Midway Little League. The crowning achievement, however, came from the Midway 12-year-old softball team, who clinched the Little League World Series in 2022, marking their 12th world title and cementing the league's reputation as a powerhouse in the sport. As the Midway Little League's 10-year-old All-Stars bask in the glory of their state championship, the community celebrates the resilience, camaraderie, and legacy of excellence that has defined the league's storied history. The "comeback kids" have not only conquered the competition but have also inspired the next generation of young athletes to dream big and never give up.
